Over the next four weeks, I’ll be sharing a series called #MAKEOVERYOURBLOG. This series is dedicated to helping you makeover your blog into a place that reflects your passion & purpose and is built for extreme growth & audience engagement.
If you’ve been blogging for a minute, you know the blood, sweat and tears it takes to build a blog that stands out amongst the large sea of blogs on the web today.
Hours of social media planning & posting.
Constantly hanging out in Facebook groups to make connections & get your name out there.
Restless evenings wracking your brain to come up with a blog post for the following day.
And still no growth.
So rinse. Repeat. Day after day. Week after week.
You lie awake at night wondering why no one is reading your blog or why none of your promotional efforts are gaining any traction?
And it’s most likely because you’re blog is missing one key element.
The one thing your blog needs to stand out is a clear topic & content focus, weaved throughout every single aspect of your blog.
A blog without clear focus…
- Confuses readers the minute they land on your homepage
- Is the reason why readers exit your blog just as quickly as they entered
- Immediately discredits your authority & expertise
- Diminishes the chance that readers will come back for more
A blog with clear focus will do 3 important things for your reader retention, traffic growth & overall blog appeal.
Speak directly to your ideal reader
If your blog has a clear focus & purpose, your message and post topics will speak directly to your target audience. Your target audience is the people who are specifically looking for what you have to offer. They are like you and will connect with you almost immediately, making them long-term readers and loyal fans.
If you are using distinct language about specific topics, the people who are your target audience are going to immediately identify with who you are and what your blog is about. You’ll start to build an entire readership full of people who LOVE what you’re doing and are excited to follow along on your journey.
Build trust with your readers, enticing them to come back for more
A clear focus will develop & strengthen your know-like-trust factor. You want your audience to feel like they know you, like you & trust you. These three things will keep them coming back for more and waiting for the chance to support you. Making your blog’s purpose clear & easy to navigate will help your readers know exactly what they can expect from you. They will begin to trust you and rely on your content.
Contribute to viral blog growth
Once you’ve established trust and likability with your readers, they will begin to share your content! Your wins will be their wins and they’ll want to help you grow by sharing your posts, announcements & freebies. You’re now being exposed to each one of their networks, expanding your reach exponentially!
Taking the time to really narrow down & define your blog’s concept and purpose is something that many bloggers overlook. Which makes it the most important thing your blog needs to stand out.
If developing clear focus for your blog is the most important thing your blog needs to stand out, then how in the world do you do it?? And how do you do it with style?
First and foremost, your topic needs to be specific. If you’re currently blogging about anything and everything that pops into your head, you’re going to need to commit to choosing one specific content topic & ONLY writing about that topic from here on out. Your language, voice, logo & imagery should ALL reflect this new, specific focus.
If you’re not sure which topics you should keep and which you should weed out, ask yourself the following questions…
What are you most excited to write about?
What are you most excited to share with others?
What do you already have experience & expertise on?
What do your friends and family already ask you for advice or help with?
What makes your perspective on this topic unique?
These questions will help you really narrow down your final blog topic and focus. Delete past posts that don’t fall under this topic. Think of ways you can express your clear, focused message in your blog design, imagery & language. This topic should be clear the moment a reader lands on your blog.
Next week, I’ll be getting into the topic of discovering your blog’s design-style. This is one of my favorite parts of this series and you’re not going to want to miss it!
See you then!
