I love blogs. I love reading them and I especially love making them. You might call me a serial blogger. But every time I’ve started a new blog, 3 months in I’ve become overwhelmed with the stresses of marketing and gaining readers and have just given up! Until I start and brand new blog (thinking things will be different) and the cycle repeats itself.
But today I’m here to tell you that there’s a better way!
I’ve discovered the secret to creating quality content for your blog that engages readers and keeps them coming back for more.
The trick is to have a repeatable formula that makes writing your posts a breeze and content that is valuable and offers readers a solution to their problem. It should also be SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly and formatted in a way that will rank highly in Google when someone searches for your post topic.
So what’s first?
Before you can begin writing, you’ll need to choose a post topic! It should be a topic that answers a reader’s question or adds value to their life, business, hobby or blogging endeavors. A post about your weekend musings may not perform as well as a post about your proven social media strategy.
Here are some great blog post topic suggestions that will help you add value and establish trust and likability with your readers.
1. A How-To Post
A how-to post is a great option for creating quality content for your blog and establish yourself as an expert on the topic. Is your niche knitting? Write about how to perfect a new stitch! Do you have a fashion blog? Write about how to organize your closet! Give your readers information that they didn’t know before reading your post.
2. Personal Failure Experience
People love to feel understood. Sharing about a time when you failed is a great way to connect with someone who might be dealing with a similar problem. Be sure to include what you learned from your failure and how your readers can avoid making the same mistake. This will also help establish trust with your reader and assure them that you have their best interest in mind.
3. Free Download
A free download is a great way to get people to your blog because who doesn’t love free stuff??? It also increases the likelihood that they’ll share the post with their friends and community, giving you more exposure. You can also include a free download as a Content Upgrade. This is an additional piece of valuable content that readers are required to enter their email address before receiving. This will help you to continue building your email list with contacts who are interested in you and already reading your material.
4. A Case Study or Client Example
A case study or client example is another option for creating quality content for your blog. Readers enjoy seeing your work and the success you’ve achieved with your unique skills and processes. As a web designer, I try to include recent client work to show readers my skill level and design style. This will help establish you as someone your readers can trust and an expert in your field.
While you’re brainstorming your topic, it’s important to be thinking of keywords you’d like to highlight. Highlighting keywords in your posts will help it rank higher in Google Search Results, directing more traffic to your blog.
Once you’ve decided on your post topic, you can begin outlining your post. I find it helpful to outline my post before going in and writing the actual text. Here is a great, SEO friendly formula to follow:
1. Start with an attention getting statement or story.
Your first few sentences need to draw people in. A great way to introduce your topic is by sharing your own personal experience. Readers want to know why this topic is important and why it’s something they should take the time to learn about.
2. Introduce the problem & offer your solution.
Briefly introduce your topic and explain how the reader will think about it in the new way by reading your post. Give them a reason to read on.
3. Go into depth about each of your points.
This will be the bulk of your post. If you’re writing a how-to post, go into depth about each step and what the reader should be doing. If you are sharing a personal failure story, list out and explain the top 3 things you learned from this experience.
4. Summarize the content you’ve shared and offer a valuable conclusion.
Don’t leave readers hanging! Be sure to wrap up your post topic in a few sentences that ends your post well.
5. Include a Call to Action (CTA).
This step is SO important. Google ranks websites and pages based on how long a reader stays on a particular site. In order to keep your reader on your site, you’ll need to give them a place to go next. This could be a Content Upgrade, a list of related posts or another page on your site that might be helpful for your readers to check out.
Creating quality content for your blog can be overwhelming and paralyzing. But, by following the steps above, you should be able to create a streamlined process for cranking out quality posts that readers want to engage with.
