Custom website design: My step by step process

“Website design is an art.”

My website design process explained step-by-step

I LOVE websites. I spend hours browsing through people’s personal websites and I’m captivated by the why’s of what they’ve created. An online space that is well-designed, strategically put together and effectively executed is a weapon for mass success. In addition to looking at other people’s websites, I love designing and making them. And today, I will be walking you step-by-step through my custom website design process.

Website design is an art. It’s way more than having pretty images and fancy fonts on a page. It is a process, beginning with a vision and ending with a launching pad. When I’m working with a client, it is important for me to understand who they are and what their business is about. It is my goal to push them in their business goals and help them accomplish more with their website.

And for every blogger, business owner and entrepreneur reading this, my mission is to help you understand and claim your online space to it’s fullest potential. Whether you’re someone ready to take your website to the next level or a fellow web designer hoping to improve and streamline your process, here is a step-by-step look into my custom website design process.

My website design process explained step-by-step

Website design process, step one is a consultation call

Ok, it’s really more of a phone date. But I’ll have coffee and I suggest you grab yourself a cup too! The phone date takes place before you ever book your website design package. This is a free 30 minute consultation call to begin getting to know each other and to help me learn more about the ins and outs of your business. During this call, we’ll discuss where you’re at with your website and what your goals are through the web design process. Then together, we’ll map out a plan of action to get started!

Website Design process step two is branding homework

Brand Identity

Through a series of exercises, I’ll help you identify and develop the things that make your business unique and set you apart from others in your industry.

Target Audience

In this exercise, you’ll define who your dream clients are and learn how to effectively reach them with your website.

Lead Magnet & List Growth

Growing a devoted email list is a marketing must. If you don’t already have a free incentive for your visitors, I’ll walk you through the process of developing and creating one, along with effective strategies for implementing it on your website.

Site Mapping

The foundation to any effective website is a clear site map. Think of a site map as the blueprint for your website. Together, we’ll strategically create a site map, laying out the structure of your site in an organized, easy-to-use and SEO (search engine optimization) friendly way.

Pinterest Project

In order to organize and express your creative vision, I’ll have you put together 4 curated Pinterest boards. These will range from logo design inspiration to typography to colors and textures that you’re drawn to. These will assist us when we begin the design phase and help me get a better idea of your vision for your brand!

Website design process, step three is your brand design

Moodboard

Here’s where the fun begins (just kidding, it’s all fun)! Using your Pinterest boards, I’ll create a custom moodboard to help us hone in on a design aesthetic and overall concept.

Logo Design

Next, I’ll create 3 distinct logo designs with the option for 2 rounds of revisions. After choosing your favorite, I’ll design additional logo variations so we have a few to work with.

Brand Style Guide

Taking your logo design, color palette, font selections and moodboard, I’ll put together your brand style guide. This will guide us in our design decisions moving forward and will give you a reference point for your branding in the future.

Next, we’ll begin the design of your site. Using Adobe Illustrator, I’ll layout each of your pages exactly as they will look live on your site. Over two rounds of revisions, we’ll work together on perfecting the layout and designing the perfect website for your business.

Website design process, step five is website building

After finalizing your website design, I’ll go in and begin building your new website live! The building process takes about a week to complete. If you already have an existing website, that design will stay live for viewers until we’re ready to launch the new design.

Website design process, step six is website testing

Once your new design is built and live, you’ll have 5-7 days for site testing. In this time, you’ll be able to click around and make sure everything works properly. At the end of this time, I will fix any bugs or make any necessary revisions.

And voila! You’ll leave the process with a beautiful, live, ready-to-use, SEO friendly website and authentic, effective branding for your business.

It is my absolute passion and privilege to design and navigate bloggers and business owners through the branding and website design process. And I would LOVE to be a part of your business’ story and success.
